ABOUT ABOUT

Join us at the Barnes Foundation for a panel discussion on the uniquely individual stories behind the creative process.

Featured presenter Bryan Collier is an acclaimed artist and writer who has received both the Coretta Scott King Award and the Caldecott Honor. In 2001, he won the Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award for Uptown, the first book he both wrote and illustrated. In 2014, he was the US nominee for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award for children’s illustration. At the CBA Festival, Collier’s talk will focus on his artwork, which will be displayed at Art Sanctuary for the month of May. Directly following the presentation, Collier will be joined by author Lorene Cary, artist Richard Watson, and composer and jazz vocalist Ruth Naomi Floyd in a conversation around the creative process and practice. The conversation will be followed by a book signing with Collier.

About Art Sanctuary's Celebration of Black Arts Festival: Art Sanctuary’s Celebration of Black Arts Festival (CBA) is one of the most prominent African-American literary and arts events in the nation putting the spotlight on black literary, visual and performing arts.  Larry Robin of Robin’s Bookstore originally founded the event as a one-day gathering of literary scholars and authors over 30 years ago.  After taking over, Art Sanctuary has spent over a decade transforming the celebration into a month-long festival showcasing the talents of African Americans of all ages, background and interests. This May, black art and culture will fill the city of Philadelphia with a month-long exhibit, community literary and performance events, author readings, and workshops for emerging writers and artists.  This year is sure to be the biggest celebration yet! For more of the events in our 33rd annual Celebration of Black Arts Festival, please visit our Festival At-a-Glance page.

Note: This event is part of Free First Sundays at the Barnes. Free First Sunday tickets include access to the Collection Gallery, exhibitions, and any programs taking place that day.
